Young Leaders Programme
The Young Leader's Scheme is for any young person aged between 14 and 18 who wishes to help with one of the three younger Sections (Beavers, Cubs or Scouts).
The Young Leader registers with the District Explorer Scout Commissioner, who will ensure that they have adequate support in their role, and makes sure that they have access to the training scheme.
The training is there to help you get the most of your time as a Young Leader. There is one compulsory Module which covers essentials like: What Scouting is, What a Young Leader is, running activities safely and risk assessing, and Child Protection. Then there are a further 12 optional modules covering topics such as programme planning, challenging behaviour, Special Needs, First Aid etc. Alongside the training modules, there are four Missions, which get you to put your training in practice.
On the right you'll see the Young Leaders Badges and Belt Buckle. The central YL badge is awarded on completion of Module 1 (within 3 months of becoming a Young Leader), the four flashes around the outside are awarded on completion of each Mission, and the belt buckle is awarded when you have completed all your Modules and all the Missions.
If you are helping out as a Young Leader as part of your Duke of Edinburgh, or for a Guide Award, then you do not have to become a member of The Scout Association or wear the Explorer Scout Uniform, as long as you only remain as a helper for the duration of your period of service. If you decide that you want to stay longer, then you need to join so that you are covered by our insurance. You do still need to register with the District Explorer Scout Commissioner, and there is a minimum amount of training which you need to do for your Awards, which should be specified on the Duke of Edinburgh website, if in doubt - ask.
All other Young Leaders (not in the group above) are registered as Explorer Scouts, and are free (and encouraged) to join in the wider Explorer Scout Programme in the District as well as your Young Leader activities. You should wear Explorer Scout Uniform while you are acting as a Young Leader.
